The construction of Osaka Castle all started in 1583 on the former ground of Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple which was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the castle so it would become the center of a new, unified Japan under the rule of Toyotomi. At that time it was the largest castle.
The castle tower is surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, notable stone walls and moats. The Nishinomaru Garden which is of the “western citadel” is a garden filled with 600 cherry blossom trees, a tea house, the former Osaka Guest House and a view from below of the castle towers. The entire Osaka Castle Park covers approximately 2 square kilometers with lots of greenery, sport facilities, a multi-purpose arena (Osakajo Hall) and a shrine that is dedicated to Toyotomi.
